Hunting Boots Buying Guide
October 10, 2022

It is important to ensure that your body is well care for when you go hunting. The right boots and clothing are a must for an enhanced camping experience.

Having reliable and dependable hunting boots plays a huge part in pushing the limits of your endurance while out in the wild.

To ensure your comfortability, here are a few tips on how to choose the perfect boots for your foraging.

The Design

There are a number of boot designs each intended for different uses. The two main categories of hunting boots are rubber boots and field boots.

Rubber boots are good for sloppy conditions like swamps and marshes. They are completely waterproof and will keep you dry over the course of your trip.

Field boots are normally made from either natural leather or synthetic materials such as polyester and nylon.

Natural leather boots are usually more rugged and ideal for use in heavy duty traversal of rugged terrain while synthetic boots are better suited for use in desert climates.

Stiffness

The choice on boot stiffness is highly dependent on the hunting area’s geography. More complex, rugged terrains with rocks and mountains require stiffer boots while flatter terrains go well with more flexible boots.

It is important to remember that boots that are not stiff enough can cause a twisted ankle and boots that are too stiff can cause foot strain.

Waterproofing and Breathability

While excellent waterproofing sounds like an absolute win, one should consider that impermeability to water works both ways- the boots will prevent water from the outside while also preventing your sweat from releasing from the inside.

As you move around more with little breathability, you risk getting blisters (which can be really painful and slow your pace).

Insulation

Insulation is usually measured in grams. The higher the grams, the better the insulation- boots with an insulation of about 200 grams are better for high-activity hunting scenarios as opposed to those with about 1100 grams which are better for low-activity hunting scenarios or ice-cold weather.

Always make sure to take into account the level of activity against the weather when considering insulation in your hunting boots.

Fit

There is nothing more uncomfortable than wearing a pair of boots that are either too snug around your feet or too loose that the sides constantly rub around your fit.

The fit should therefore be snug, not so tight as to cut off circulation but not so loose that your feet slide forward when you move.

When trying out your boots, ensure that you wear your hunting socks while doing so and it is better to try them on later on in the day when your feet are a bit swollen. This ensures that the boot is a perfect fit.

Breaking in

Like many shoes, hunting boots need to be broken in- this is particularly true for leather ones. The boot design will determine how much time this will take. Stiffer boots will take longer than more flexible ones.

All in all, picking the right hunting boots requires a good awareness of the terrain conditions you will be working with. From this, you can pick a good balance of the aforementioned factors to ensure your hunting trip is a blast.
